Understanding your Cat

The most fundamental thing we teach all our clients is to understand your cat. You MUST see your world from the cats point of view. Once you can genuinely start to do this your relationship with your cat will be immeasurably improved. This is especially important in cases of problem feline behavior!!
The problem is society is fundamentally dog biased in its behavioural knowledge and the cat could not be more different. This is why the first chapter in our book is devoted to a brief précis of cat behavior principals. We hope to expand this in our blog over the next few months.
In our experience most of the problems we see are a direct result of a breakdown in the owner / cat relationship, not a problem with the cat. However there are notable exceptions!!
Thus we try to change the animals environment and the way the owner interacts with the cat rather than trying to force our will on the cat or apportioning blame for misdemeanour’s.
Remember though that prevention is much better than a cure and so as early as you can try to learn the basics of feline behavior, so from the very start you can react to your cat in the correct way.
Our aim is to set up a great relationship which will lead to many happy and fulfilling years of feline companionship and enrich our own and our cats lives

Cat Behavior

Hello and thank you for calling, Sarah and I hope to publish regularly in this blog as a lead into our main cat practice which is opening in August (we hope) and our cat behavior site Purrfect Cat Behavior.

We have one vet practice already (dogs and cats) and have always had a dream of opening a cats only practice as we strongly believe that in an ideal world cats are SO different to dogs they need their own practice ;-)

Merlin is one of our cats who has lived with us now for the past 4 years having previously lead a life of disrepute on the outskirts of North Yorkshire. He is approximately 10 years old and has a great personality encompassing lovingness and catittude!! He enjoys a surburban lifestyle, languishing on the window ledge in the sun or sprawled across the computer keyboard when he thinks it is getting more attention than him! He makes the odd prison break attempt at freedom to the outside world but always ends up being found (generally stood screaming at another cat, neither one willing to make the first move but both ready to prove their ability to see the other out). What we are planning to do over the following blogs is to keep you updated with Merlin’s life and hopefully find some interesting behavioural aspects to focus on :-)

This includes introducing a dog and then even worse another cat!! Watch this space

The video below shows a VERY scared cat (note the cat is not aggressive it is frightened) and there are glaring errors ref the cats environment even at this vets surgery. Correction of these errors would make a lot of difference to this cat, prevention is ALWAYS better than the cure with cats!!

Learn cat behavior and how to speak feline for maximum enjoyment and understanding of your cat  ;-)

Video of a frightened NOT aggressive cat, important subtle aspects of cat behavior, you should understand. Yet this was featured on YouTube as an aggressive cat!!
