Dog Behavior Training: There Are Many Aids Available

by Paul Proctor

A pet that lacks proper dog behavior training can cause a lot of disturbance and damages, not to mention frustration. But don't worry; there are lots of options available for training your dog. Some, like books or dog training videos, offer do-it-yourself solutions. Or you can opt for formal classes with professional instructors.

Basic dog training should start as young as possible with a puppy, preferably. Once a pup is out of the nursery box and into the household, a responsible owner should begin to convey what conduct is acceptable and what is not. Certain normal canine behaviors, such as chewing on anything that feels pleasant to those baby teeth may be very abnormal to the human master and seen as destructive. Having appropriate toys and treats can be as much a part of dog behavior training as specific behavior modifications.

There are also very specific training issues, such as teaching the dog the right places and times to relieve itself. This is another case where it's important to be realistic and aware of the normal range of canine behavior. It's not realistic to expect a baby to be housebroken. It's also perfectly reasonable for more mature dogs to have an accident now and then. It's not reasonable or appropriate to expect a dog to wait 12 hours for the chance to eliminate. The dog's needs must be met in order to get the desired behavior from the dog. It's helpful to put down newspapers in a specific place or somehow make a specific "rest stop" that a dog can use in the case of emergency.

While most dog owners are reasonably comfortable housebreaking their dogs, more complex dog behavior training may require professional assistance. Such training may include teaching the dog to sit and stay, or it may encompass more complex training to help the dog protect the owner's home. There are many videos about dog training available, and online training assistance can also be found.

When attempting to train your dog, it may be necessary to call in a professional, especially in cases where the dog owner has no experience with the specific area, like crate training. Even if you've owned dogs growing up, you may not have had any experience training a dog to accept a crate when the owners are away. Many dog owners find it easier to find a training campus, rather than going through trial and error. Using a crate should not be an excuse to ignore a dog for hours at a time, and the decision should be weighed carefully in consideration of the specific animal.

Based on dog breed, individual dog personality, and other factors, a professional trainer can provide important advice regarding realistic training expectations. For example, a greyhound shouldn't be expected to live in an apartment with no opportunity to run and exercise. Professional advice can result in more effective, efficient training, leading to a happier dog, and a satisfied dog owner.

Man's best friend can be a pain instead of a pleasure without proper dog behavior training. There are many options for training your dog, from books and dog training videos to formal classes with trained instructors: basic dog training can be simple as using a library book or paperback to train a new puppy to a "sleepover" dog academy. Some dog breeds require lots of room to run and exercise and will likely not respond well to training geared towards living in a small area. A professional trainer is a great source of information about the needs and personalities of certain breeds.
